Knights of Columbus Spearfish Council was founded on September 27, 1970 through the efforts of Catholic gentlemen and with the support of the Father Szalay of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Council 6251 consists of 1 parishes in Spearfish area Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Spearfish, SD - and provides support for various charitable projects and activities.
FR. SZALAY COUNCIL | COUNCIL NUMBER 06251 | SPEARFISH , SOUTH DAKOTA:
The council was originally formed after a group of men, who belonged to the Lead, South Dakota council , decided to looking into forming their own council in Spearfish rather than traveling to Lead for meetings. In doing so they felt that they could do more for the needs of St. Joseph's parrish and their community. With the help and sponsorship of the Lead Council, and through the efforts of Clifford Papik and Gerald O'Brien, the forming of our council was accomplished and was to be known as Spearfish Council 06251. The Council had its first chartered meeting on September 27, 1970, with Grand Knight , Tom Nelson; Deputy Grand Knight Gerald O'Brien; Financial Secretary, Frank Mattern; Chancellor Leo McGuigan; Recorder Matt Langenfeld; Lecturer Glen Collins; Treasurer Mike Horvath; Advocate Bill McGrath; Warden Ted Miles, Inside Guard Willie Lovitt; Outside Guard John Deibert; Trustees Virgil Weber, Jay Gorham, and Leonard Weber. Father Eugene Szalay was Chaplain The Council name was changed to Father Szalay Council 06251, as requested by the Spearfish Council, and was approved by Supreme Council as of April 9, 1999

About Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney (portrait at left) and has been successful in Spearfish for many years. The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization, it was named in honor of the mariner Christopher Columbus. The group was founded to help men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement and to setup a system of insurance so that widows and children of members of the group who die would not find themselves in dire circumstances.
One of the primary missions of the Knights of Columbus is to ensure that the Catholic Church remains vigorous and active. Toward this end, the Knights feed the hungry and help to shelter the homeless. They help senior citizens remain active and healthy. The Knights of Columbus sponsor blood drives and fight to protect the right to life of all individuals.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's fraternal benefit society founded in 1882. Today, it is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. The Knights of Columbus have been involved in a large number of service projects that include programs with groups like Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics, providing new winter coats to children, stocking food pantries, and helping victims of disasters such as Hurricane Sandy, the explosion in West Texas and the tornadoes in Oklahoma. The Knights have more than 14,000 councils and 1.8 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam and Spain.
